China faces myriad serious social challenges at the moment. In Hunan Province, in the south of the country, there’s been another suicide recently over an eviction; in Liaoning Province in northeast China, the colours of a large numbers of vegetables were found to have been altered using chemicals; and police in Beijing have broken up the Sunday services of churches for three consecutive weeks.
But one incident stands out for me as representing an issue the government should be particularly ashamed over – the suicide of a farmer in Shandong Province.
